हिजरी कैलेंडर के अनुसार, शब-ए-बारात की रात हर साल में एक बार शाबान महीने की 14 तारीख को सूर्यास्त के बाद शुरू होती है। शब-ए-बारात का अर्थ है शब यानी रात और बारात यानी बरी होना। शब-ए-बारात की रात को इस दुनिया को छोड़कर जाने वाले अपने पूर्वजों की कब्रों में रोशनी और उनके लिए दुआ मागी जाती है। इस्लामिक मान्यता के अनुसार इस रात को अल्लाह अपने चाहने वालों को हिसाब-किताब रखने के लिए आते हैं। इस दिन जो भी सच्चे मन से अल्लाह से अपने गुनाहों के लिए माफी मांगते हैं अल्लाह उनके लिए जन्नत के दरवाजे खोल देता है।

शब-ए-बारात पर मुस्लिम समाज के लोग मस्जिदों और कब्रिस्तानों में जाकर अपने और पूर्वजों के लिए खुदा से इबादत करते हैं। घरों को विशेषरूप से सजाया और संवारा जाता है। मस्जिद में नमाज पढ़कर अल्लाह से अपने गुनाहों की माफी मांगी जाती है। घरों में पकवान जैसे हलवा, बिरयानी, कोरमा आदि बनाया जाता है। इबादत के बाद इसे गरीबों में बांटा जाता है। शब-ए-बारात में मस्जिदों और कब्रिस्तानों में खास तरह की सजावट की जाती है। कब्रों पर चिराग जलाकर उनके लिए मगफिरत की दुआंए मांगी जाती हैं। इस्लाम में इसे चार मुकद्दस रातों में से एक माना जाता है, जिसमें पहली आशूरा की रात, दूसरी शब-ए-मेराज, तीसरी शब-ए-बारात और चौथी शब-ए-कद्र होती है।
